Inside your home you use electricity to turn on the lights and power appliances like the fridge, stove, television and computer. We don't see electricity in our homes, but it allows us do the things we often take for granted every day, such as flick the light switch and charge up a cell phone.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe around electricity in your home:

  • Avoid plugging too many appliances into extension cords or electrical outlets.
  • Speak up about damaged plugs or cords that are broken, or have wires showing.
  • Don't pull on electrical cords to unplug them.
  • Don't try to pry toast out of a toaster with any type of appliance.
  • Never put anything else but an electrical plug into an electrical outlet.
  • If you are standing in water, never touch any electrical devices, including, light switches, hair dryers, curling irons or anything that has a plug.
